What does it reveal about our main character?

Keep in mind that this is being graded, so your response should be in complete sentences and include appropriate grammar & punctuation. Show that you actually put some thought into your response!

a. “Everything became desperate; all decisions profound, all emotions fierce” (19).

-Everything? What does John mean by that?
-Look up the meaning of ‘profound.’ What decisions might he be referring to?
-In the context of chapter 4, what emotions might John be referring to?

b. “My life slipped and shifted each time someone I knew climbed aboard a crowded Greyhound and headed for boot camp” (24).

-What was changing in John’s life at this time?
-Why the word slipped? Why not just ‘changed’?
-How might this have affected the way he pursued Ginny?

c. “I wasn’t at all sure of any future, so I wanted a life as quickly as possible, before it was my turn to board the last bus out” (24).

-What does John say about his far-from-now future?
-What does he mean, or what’s he referring to, when he says, “I wanted a life”?
-What does John see in his immediate future?

d. “I didn’t feel the luxury of time and subtle courtship; I had to start things now” (24).

-Why was there no luxury of time for John?
-Look up the meaning of ‘subtle.’ Why might John think subtle courtship didn’t apply at this time in his life?
-Why the emphasis on the word now?

John meant everything became desperate because everything became just that. We were short artillery, army personnel, and workers in factories that produce metal which later turn into artillery. All decisions profound means that every decision made, was for the war. Everything they did was to help out the war cause. The emotions he is referring to are those against the Japanese. How they surprise bombed us. Not just any country but the U.S.A. And I can relate to that because even though I was young when the Twin Towers were bombed, it still pissed me off. And now that I'm older and more mature it would infuriate me even more.

John means he’s not sure he will have a future. He thinks he might get sent off to war, and at worse, get killed. If this happens he won’t have a future. Also when he sais he wants a life he means he wants to merry a girl and have a family before he gets sent off to war. He wants to live through those precious moments in life before he leaves. The one thing I don’t understand is why would he start a family if he is going to war and might possibly be killed. If he does this his family will be heart broken, is the joy of having a family really worth all the pain they will suffer in the end? In my opinion this is a very selfish act. To love someone and knowing you’re going to hurt them and loving them anyway is just awful and unfair. John isn't thinking about others needs and feelings he only concentrating on what he feels and needs.

In this quote John wants a life. He is worried that when he goes off to war he will die then he will miss out on every thing that he could do durring life. He wants to rush through life and do every thing in a couple months. When he says he wanted a life he is telling this in the future so it is pass tence, also it is 50 years later when he is saying this.

  5. C. John means that he might not have a future after the war. Maybe he'll die or some other event will occur. So he wants to settle down maybe get a wife and possibly some kids, before it was his time to get sent off to the war. Or maybe just spend time with just his family and friends while he has time left

  6. d. “I didn’t feel the luxury of time and subtle courtship; I had to start things now” (24).

There was no time for John because of the impending enlistment he was about to face at 18. He did not have the comfort to take matters slowly and think out his relationship with Ginny. The meaning of subtle is "fine or delicate in meaning or intent". Therefore, subtle courtship could be perceived as developing strong feelings for one another and taking their relationship slowly. Subtle courtship did not apply to John at this time of his life because he was soon to be shipped off to war and did not have the lavishness of taking things slowly with Ginny. He needed to start things now because he knows at war he could die, and he wants to live his life to the fullest beforehand.

  7. B:johns life changed with the war and meeting ginny and he might have used the word slipped because his life changed in bad ways too. this may have affected his feelings to ginny because he might not of liked her as much if he wasent already dealing with the war and his fathers depression.

  8. A. In this quote John is saying that he has no other choice but to go into the war because no one else is willing to. He has no choice but to make this decision. He has to have strong emotions. He cant be scared.

John is not sure if he will make it out of this war alive. he is saying that he wants to live life to its fullest so if he dies at least he spent the last few months with his family and friends. this is showing that John is a very unselfish person because he is going into this war for his country and partly thinking he will die for it too. live life to the fullest, because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

There was no time for luxury for John because he new that as soon his 18th birthday came, he was enlisting in the army. The meaning of the word subtle is delicate, so when he said he didn't feel the time of subtle courtship, he means that he didn't have time to delicatly go slow in his relationship with Ginny, because he knew he was joining his friends in the war soon. The reason there's emphasis on "now" is because he really needs to lives his life before the war.

  11. D. Knowing that he could be sent of to fight in the near future, John didn't have the luxury of casually taking his time with subtle or "crafty" dating practices. John didn't feel there was time to play games with his girlfriend Ginny. He felt the clock ticking and knew he needed to act now if he wanted a wife and children. John felt the need to make major life decisions now because there were no guarantees about tomorrow.

  12. Quote C
John says that he is not sure of what the far future holds. He does not know if he will be killed, or stay alive and die of old age. By saying that he wants a life, it means that he would like to do as many things as possible before getting shipped out to s training camp, because there is always the possibility of being killed in combat. In his near future, he can see himself being shipped out to a camp, working hard, and being shipped off to Europe, and either coming back to his hometown a hero, or not coming back at all.

  13. Quote B
A lot of things were changing in John's life. For example, Pearl Harbor was just attacked, a cute girl named Ginny recently became a part of his life, and sadly, most of his friends were enlisting for the army. However, John cannot enlist because he was too young. The author used the word "slipped" because everything around John was not just changing; parts of his life were disappearing. He might not be so in love with Ginny if his friends were still with him. Since his friends were gone, he might have been lonely and needed a friend when Ginny came along.

  14. Quote B
When he said his life was slipping away he ment everyone that went on to the ship he would probley lose during the war. Everyone he knew could die and there was nothing he could do about it. If he survied the war he would come back and half the people he knew befor wouldn't be there.

john says that he wants to have his life before the war meaning that he wants to be loved, date someone.he want to experience what it is like to have a family before he goes off to war. By the sound of the quote he seems like he thinks he is going to die over there and will not be coming back. he dosen't want to die before he truley has a relationship.

  16. B:“My life slipped and shifted each time someone I knew climbed aboard a crowded Greyhound and headed for boot camp”

At this time everyone he knew was shipping off to war, and he was afraid of the time when it was his turn to ride that bus. When he used the word "slipped" he meant that each time a person boarded that bus was that much closer to him being that person. When he was dating Ginny he knew that there was a bad taste between them and their ideas of war, so John might have to veer away from the subject of War.

In this quote John is saying how the war has changed everyone, and no one will do anything because they are too scared. he feels like he has no choice but to enlist in the war, because all the other people would rather just stay out of it. He doesn't want to feel scared, so he wants to go off to war.

  18. C. John means in this quote that there might be no life for him after he has to go to the war. So when he said this he meant that he wanted to live his life to its fullest before going off to war and he wanted to have a relationship with Ginny before he left and he didn't really care what people said or thought of him because he beleived that soon he could be dead.

  19. The fact that he was basically watching his freinds go to there death was changing his life. His emotions were slipping. He wasnt just cjanging his emotions were slipping. Ginny might not have been so mad if he didnt have to go to war like the rest of his freinds.

  21. Quote c- John is saying that in the future he will be at war the day he turns 18. When john says "i wanteed a life" he is saying that he wants to do everything he can until the day he boards the greyhound bus and not waste time sitting around at home. John see himself fighting for his country.

  22. C:He says that he might go to war and if he does he could possibly die which would prevent him from any future. When he says “I wanted a life” he meant he wanted a family, wife, and a happy life before he would have to go off to war. John sees he might go off to war. I agree with John in going off to war is scary. I don’t agree je should start a family because what if he dies and there left there. Its not fair to them.
